Skåne wants to offer fertility tests for all interested men and women at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö. The only obstacle which remains is a nod of approval from Skåne’s ethical review board.

Men will undergo a sperm exam, and, with the use of ultrasound scans and blood samples, women will find out about their egg reserves.

The model for this project opened last fall at Danish hospital Rigshospitalet, in Copenhagen, and the scheme has been fully booked ever since.

The idea is to help the visitors, either couples or single women, judge their chances of becoming parents, so that they can reduce the risk of involuntary childlessness later in life.

If the project is given the green light, an offer will be sent to all Malmö women aged between 25 and 35, reported local newspaper Sydsvenskan.

“It would be fantastic if we could use this early scan to find women with low egg reserves. Then they have the option of trying to conceive, or perhaps freezing their eggs, and hopefully avoid fertility problems later in life,” said Liberal regional councilor Gilbert Tribo to Sydsvenskan.

“This will save money, but above all reduce human suffering,” Tribo continued.
