Two Italian climbers die in Swiss Alps plunge

Two Italian climbers died after plunging 300 metres in the Swiss Alps, police said on Sunday.

The experienced hikers were using a rope to descend the Mönch (Monk) mountain in the Bernese Alps on Saturday afternoon when they fell to their deaths.

“Towards 12.15 pm they were in Fieschertal in the Valais canton on a narrow south-facing ridge when they fell about 300 metres,” Bern police said in a statement.

The Italians, aged 48 and 54, died at the scene. No further details were given.
