Swedish teen shot while sunbathing in Turkey

A 17-year-old Swede was lazing by the pool during a family holiday in Turkey last Tuesday when he was shot in the back.

The young Swede, who is reported to be from Kiruna in northern Sweden, was rushed to hospital in the popular holiday destination of Antalya and underwent a successful operation.

"He runs into the room and says that something has happened with his back... We can see that there is blood and he has a hole in the middle of his lower back," the boy's father told the local Norrbottens-Kuriren daily.

The boy is reported to have been fortunate in that the bullet was found lodged close to his spine, but as he had been lying down at the time it had stayed in the flesh of his back.

"At first we though that it was some sort of air-rifle... but on the x-rays you can see that it is a real bullet," the boy's father said, adding that doctors later concluded that it was a nine millimetre pistol round.

The incident has left the family baffled as no one heard a shot. The 17-year-old was himself listening to music at the time as he sunbathed.

Turkish police have opened an investigation into the incident and are working on a theory that the shot was fired from a distance and hit the boy by mistake, according to Norrbottens-Kuriren.

The family have meanwhile returned to Sweden.
