Truck strikes 'yoga pose' after massive crash
Four tanker trucks crashed in a serial collision in central Sweden on Tuesday, causing one of them to rise up high in the air and resulting in major delays in traffic.
“It is not completely clear what caused the accident. But one theory is that the first truck tried to avoid some rubbish on the road and stepped on the brakes. The vehicles behind didn’t notice in time,” said Jan Callas of the emergency services in Jönköping to local news site jnytt.se.
The accident occurred at 12.54 on the E4 highway south of Jönköping. Four tankers suddenly crashed into each other, lifting one up high in the air like a huge letter A.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene and managed to get all drivers out the vehicles unharmed. One of the drivers was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
The fire brigade was counting on a drawn out salvage operation as there were concerns that one of the vehicles would tip over onto the traffic travelling in the other direction.
Traffic was seriously delayed in both directions.
“There are long queues already and I think it will look like this for several hours,” said Callas to the paper shortly after the accident.
There were initially concerns that the tankers were carrying cargo that might prove dangerous to the public if exposed.
But the emergency services soon quashed the fears, explaining that the four tankers, all from Sweden, were only carrying sand and timber.
Around 8pm the salvage operation was completed and traffic was running smoothly again.
The investigation into the incident is still on-going with the people involved being questioned by police, according to the paper.
