Swedish teen victim of shopping cart ‘assault’
A Swedish teenage girl, who was shopping at a discount department store in southern Sweden, was allegedly the victim of shopping cart rage when a 40-year-old woman rammed her with her trolley after a perceived insult.
“There was a real bang at the impact,” one witness told police, reports daily Expressen.
The 16-year-old girl was shopping with her mother at the discount department store Gekås, near Ullared, on a very busy day in October last year, according to the paper.
The teen’s mother, who is reportedly in her forties, accidentally bumped her cart into the back of an old woman, who was shopping at the store accompanied by her daughter.
The old lady became very agitated and started yelling at the pair. As they were leaving, the 16-year-old suddenly felt as if she was kicked in the back. She was certain it was the old woman, reports the paper.
The next thing she knew, she was slammed in her back by a shopping trolley.
“The older lady’s daughter took a run with the shopping trolley to get more force into it and with her face contorted, she ran it straight into the back of the young girl,” said a witness to the police, according to Expressen.
The 16-year-old, who was by now in tears, looked around to see that the 40-year-old woman was jeering at her.
With two witnesses to the event, the 40-year-old woman is now being charged with assault at the Varberg District Court. According to Expressen, the girl wants 13,700 kronor ($1,948) in compensation.
However, the 40-year-old denies all allegations, saying she is certain neither she nor her mother smashed their cart into anyone or kicked them in the back.
