An inspired Norway team looks bound for the quarter finals after blasting twelve goals past a shell-shocked Germany at the World Championships in Stockholm on Sunday.

Fueled by Patrick Thoresen’s double strike in the first minute and a half of the game, Norway eventually powered to an unprecedented 12-4 win to leave Germany’s tournament in tatters.

"When we got to 6-0, we were like, ‘We can’t lose, really.’ Then we just kept scoring," said Morten Ask, one of the main architects of the win with four assists.

"After the second period, we just wanted to be aware of not getting any injuries or doing stupid stuff like getting suspended. We just had to stick to our game plan," he told the tournament’s website.

Thoresen added his own third, and Norway’s seventh, in the 33rd minute, as Germany struggled to make any impression on the game.

"I don’t know what to say right now," Germany’s Christoph Schubert told the IIHF website.

"It was probably one of the worst days in German hockey history. Every little thing they did ended up in our goal. I can’t even count them up anymore. We didn’t get a lucky save or bounce today."

Norway stormed into a 12-2 lead, before Germany salvaged some modicum of pride with the last two goals of the game.

Norway currently lies fourth in the Stockholm group of the world championships, which are being held in the Swedish capital and in Helsinki, Finland.

Norway meets Denmark in its final preliminary round game on Tuesday. Fifth-placed Latvia must win its last two games and hope for Norway or the Czech Republic to slip up if it is to snag the last quarter-final berth.
