“He was shot in the back,” said officer Robert Edh of the county police to news agency TT.

The attack took place in the Gårdsten district in northeastern Gothenburg around 11pm on Thursday evening. Police were quickly called to the scene and a local witness said two shots had been heard fired shortly before.

The driver was taken to the Gothenburg Sahlgrenska hospital. Police are still unwilling to disclose the extent of his injuries.

According to news agency TT, the man has sustained serious injuries but his condition is currently stable.

Police said that at least one person was later seen running from the scene, although witnesses have mentioned two people in the back seat of the vehicle.

Bullet holes were found in the car, which has been taken in for forensic analysis.

Around midnight, officers were still talking to witnesses who could have seen or heard the shooting take place around the Gårdsten community centre.

As of yet, however, police are not certain how much help their statements will be.

“We are fine-combing the area to be able to finish our report and move on,” Edh told TT.
