French drinking less than before

A new study has revealed that fewer than one in two customers in bars, cafés or restaurants in France drink alcohol, and those most likely to drink are over 55.

Only 45% of those who go out to drink and eat consume alcohol, according at a study held by responsible drinking association Entreprise et Prévention.

A similar study in 2008 showed 26.7% of those asked drank alcohol when they went to a bar or restaurant.

Older generations are more likely to drink, the current survey also found, with 30% of the 55 plus age group consuming alcohol, compared to 15% for the 18-24-year-olds.

The survey also revealed that, as the age-old stereotype suggests, French consumption of alcohol is linked to meal times – of those asked, 40% drank with lunch, and 40% with dinner. Only 18% drank outside meal times.
