Winter winds return to batter Sweden
Swedish forecasters are warning that winter is making another appearance in Sweden over the next few days, and have issued warnings for slippery roads and harsh winds.
“It is mainly in southern Norrland and northern Svealand that the rain will turn into snow. But it looks like it could happen in some areas even in more southern parts of the country,” said meteorologist Emil Björck, of the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI, to news agency TT.
SMHI has issued a class 1 warning for large parts of the eastern coastal area, around lake Vättern and east of lake Vänern in central Sweden.
The Swedish Transport Authority (Trafikverket) are asking motorists to take heed as the snow and the slush will give slippery roads over night.
Behind the unsteady weather is a low-pressure area, which is barreling in over Sweden from the southeast. It is bringing with it northerly winds with falling temperature and rain, returning winter to many parts of Sweden.
According to Björck the unstable winter weather should be moving off fairly soon, for more southern and eastern parts of the country it will be gone over the night to Saturday.
More northern parts are not as lucky, where SMHI believes that the worst snowfalls will occur overnight.
“Over the course of the day the wind will kick up especially along the Norrland coastline, and there will be harsh winds. As there is snowfall expected at the same time, it will feel just like winter again,” Björck told TT.
However, frozen Swedes who are fed up with winter can take comfort in that despite the warnings for this weekend, forecasters believe that the weekend after may bring sun and even something resembling summer heat to Sweden.
“There is a high pressure area over the Mediterranean, which is slowly but surely bringing us milder air,” Björck told daily Kvällsposten.
