A 21-year-old man from central Sweden died on Monday morning after what appears to have been a fall from a balcony in a hotel in the Canary Islands, where he was holidaying with three friends.

The man, an ice hockey player from Dalarna, was staying at the IFA Dunamar hotel in Playa del Ingles, and was found lying in the pool area at 3.30am.

“He fell from a balcony,” said Linn Duvhammar, spokesperson for the ministry for foreign affairs, to the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Emergency services attempted to revive the man, but failed to succeed, and a doctor pronounced him dead soon after.

The man’s family has since been informed, according to the ministry.

Local media have reported that no crimes are suspected by the police authorities.

The group of Swedish tourists had travelled to the Canary Islands in the middle of last week in what was supposed to be a sunny getaway.

Instead, the remaining travelers will leave the Spanish community on Wednesday under these tragic circumstances.

On Tuesday, the deceased man’s hockey team gathered for a minute’s silence in memory of their teammate.

“He was extremely kind and a well-liked teammate,” wrote the team on the official website.
