A Friday night taco dinner at the Lindström household in central Sweden didn't turn out as planned after hundreds of crawling brown maggots emerged from a container of canned corn.

"The plan was to have tacos, and we had tacos, but perhaps with a certain aftertaste," Anders Lindström jokingly told the Expressen newspaper.

Lindström and his family were planning a pleasant Friday night taco dinner at their home in Sågmyra outside of Falun in central Sweden.

Friday night Tex-Mex, Swedish style, in an increasingly popular trend among households in Sweden, and last Friday, the Lindström family was no exception.

But when Lindström's girlfriend arrived home, she noticed one of the three newly purchased cans of corn was leaking.

The family was then shocked to discover most of the yellow kernels they expected to find had been replaced by a swarm of brown maggots.

"The reaction was something special, we were a little surprised," Lindström told the newspaper.

Closer inspection revealed that one can of Garant-brand corn had been slightly damaged, most likely prior to the pre-dinner purchase.

While the Lindströms were able to follow through with their taco dinner using corn from the other cans they had purchased, they nevertheless plan to contact Garant, a brand produced by Axfood and sold in Willys and Hemköp grocery stores.

Axfood spokesperson Ingmar Kroon expressed his dismay over the maggot-infested can of corn.

"That's a very serious error. I've actually never heard of it before," he told Expressen.

He theorized that something happened during the shipping of the can from the factory to the store.

"If a can isn't sealed, anything can happen to the contents," he said.

"If the can is damaged, just about anything can get in there and it can be as nasty as you can imagine."
