Bones find linked to missing woman mystery
Volunteers searching for the remains of 31-year-old Marina Johansson, who went missing in July 2010, on Saturday located bones which police believe to have come from a human body.
"Several finds have been made at several locations. One of the finds is likely to be the remains of a human being," said Sven Persson at Västra Götaland police to news agency TT on Saturday evening.
Marina Johansson was last seen on July 28th 2010. A year later her ex-boyfriend was charged with her murder, but was acquitted by both a district and appeals court.
The appeals court concluded there wasn’t enough forensic evidence or testimony tying the man to the alleged murder.
The case drew a great deal of attention because the body of the alleged victim had never been found.
Volunteer group Missing People on Saturday arranged a major search operation close to where Johansson had lived in a bid to find the Johansson's body. During the afternoon divers located clothing and what is believed to be skeletal bones in a lake in Svartedalen nature reserve.
According to a report in the Expressen daily, the volunteers also found a tarpaulin and a mattress.
Police have now cordoned off the location and the bone fragments will be subjected to forensic analysis.
Johansson was reported missing by her mother on August 2nd 2010 and two days later her ex-boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of her murder despite the fact that police found nothing incriminating in her house.
It was not until friends of Johansson moved into the house five months later that blood stains were discovered on a mattress, which had been covered by a snug-fitting blanket.
Further examination inside the house revealed what police suspect to be a bullet hole with bone fragments on a wall next to the bed.
However, Johansson's body has never been found, nor has a murder weapon ever been recovered.
