The beer goggles theory that people look more attractive after a few drinks is true, at least when it comes to how sexy we feel about ourselves.

A study by researchers at the University of Grenoble in southern France carried out a series of tests to see whether alcohol has any impact on attractiveness.

The study, called "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder", carried out a series of trials to see what impact a few drinks has.

In a first trial, nineteen drinkers in a Grenoble bar were asked to rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 7 for attractiveness, intelligence and sense of humour. Their alcohol level was measured at the same time.

Researchers found that the more people drank, the higher they rated themselves on the sexy scale.

A second study looked at whether it was enough just to think you had been drinking to have the same effect

In that test, 94 men were told they were testing an alcoholic drink for a made-up company.

Unknown to the men, only half were served the real alcoholic drink, while the rest were given a non-alcoholic beverage.

When asked how sexy they were, those who thought they had been drinking rated themselves more highly.

Those who didn't think they'd been drinking alcohol, even if they had, rated themselves loser.

"Our study shows that just thinking you've been drinking alcohol can make you feel sexier," said Laurent Bègue, a professor of psychology at the Pierre-Mendès-France University.
