Monaco’s Prince Albert and Princess Charlene continued their tour of Lapland on Monday as they prepared to visit an open air school for young reindeer herders in the far north of Norway.

The royals are in the middle of a three-day trip to learn more about the lives of the indigenous Sami population and to discuss the impact of climate change in the region.

“This is a great experience and I’m very pleased that Charlene is getting to experience it too,” the 54-year-old prince told Norway’s TV 2.

The pair began their visit in Finland before crossing the border into Kautokeino in Norway on Sunday, where they were greeted by the proud mayor, Klemet Erland Hætta.

“This is a form of recognition for our region and it is also recognition for the Sami culture,” Hætta told TV 2.

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene, 34, also planned to sleep in a Lavvu, a traditional Sami temporary dwelling, and attend a reindeer race before leaving Kautokeino on Tuesday morning.
