Merkel ally suffers massive state defeat
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's junior coalition ally suffered a huge defeat Sunday when voters in western Saarland state kicked the party out of the regional assembly, according to exit polls.
Merkel's own Christian Democrats won the biggest share of the vote, with 34.5 percent, while the Free Democratic Party, with just 1.5 percent, missed the five percent hurdle for a state parliamentary seat, the poll for public TV showed.
