Scandal-plagued British pop star Pete Doherty is paying off a fine for smashing up a car in Berlin during a drunken rampage in monthly instalments – and will not be finished until the end of 2016.

Doherty came to grief after a long night in a notoriously raucous bar in the Kreuzberg district called Trinkteufel or Drink Devil, after the end of his 2009 Germany tour.

After leaving the bar in the early hours of the morning, he smashed up a parked car, the Tagesspiegel reported – and was briefly arrested.

Six months later he received a fine of €30,000 – calculated for 30 days of his estimated daily earnings of €1,000. He was presented the option of paying the, going to jail for 30 days or working off the fine with socially-useful work.

But Berlin joggers were never likely to see the singer of Babyshambles and the Libertines sweeping up in their local park, the paper suggested.

Now, after leaving the Berlin authorities waiting, Doherty and his lawyers arranged to pay €500 a month – meaning his fine will only be paid off in November 2016.

Aside from his successful music career, Doherty’s former relationship with top model Kate Moss and openness about his use of hard drugs has kept him in the public eye not only in the UK but across Europe for years.
