In July, 38-year-old Jamal Dati had waited for his ex-girlfriend in front of home in the town of Verdun shortly after leaving jail. When she came home, he attacked her and hit her several times on the head before stealing her mobile phone. The victim is also the mother of Jamel’s five-year-old son.

Jamel was arrested trying to flee the country at the Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport in the outskirts of Paris.

On Wednesday, a court in Nancy handed him a two-year prison sentence.

Jamal was also found guilty of harassing his ex-girlfriend on the phone from June to September 2011. After stealing her mobile phone, he sent a message to the victim’s father, saying "We got her".

His sister Rachida Dati has shot to fame as a symbol of French diversity. In 2007, she was appointed Justice Minister, becoming the first politician of North African origin to be given a senior post in government in France.

She stepped down in 2009 amid attacks of her management style and her taste for fashionable clothes.
