The 36-year-old parachutist braved temperatures of -50 degrees Celsius as he leapt out of a plane above Verbier in the Swiss Alps to begin a breakneck flight that took him over the Italian border to Aosta.

“It was just fantastic. It was the best jump of my life,” he told newspaper 20 Minuten.

“It was so clear that I was even able to see the sea at Genua. It was simply amazing.”

Travelling at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour, Läng became the first ever person to cross a mountain range in free fall, according to his team.

Läng said there was one hairy moment as he approached the 4,314-metre Grand Combin, but he soon realized his altitude was sufficient to get him over the mountain.

“There was plenty of margin; I never had any doubts. It was just fantastic.”
