Big blast rocks central Gothenburg eatery

A strong explosion triggered several automatic alarms in a row of shops in central Gothenburg early on Friday morning. Police are still not clear on what has caused the blast.

“Several police patrols are on the scene together with emergency services to attempt to work out what it is that has happened, if it is a gas explosion or something else,” said Lars Tunefjord of the Västra Götaland County police to news agency TT.

The incident occurred around 4.30am on Friday morning inside or around the restaurant Gamle Port in central Gothenburg. Many windows were shattered in the blast.

“There’s been some form of shock wave that has smashed out windows, “ confirmed Tunefjord.

However, as far as is known there was no one in the restaurant at the time, as it was closed at the time of the incident. The explosion is reported to have been very powerful.

“We are located about 800-900 metres away and we could hear the blast,” said Tunefjord to TT.

Claes Norder, a builder working on a building site nearby, said he though something had caved in.

"But of course it is more unpleasant if it is a bomb or something like that. It was not like it was a small blast," he told TT.

Martin Dellmer, another workman in the area, agreed with him.

"That was some bang," he said.

"I went down the street to take a look but saw nothing. It was dead around here," he said to TT.

The area around the eatery has been cordoned off and police say that a preliminary investigation is underway.

"As far as I know bomb technicians are still on the scene," said police spokesperson Ulf Edberg to TT just after 7am.
