The man, who has been called “the pooper” by local media, took the escalator to the lower floor of the store, where he crouched down on the floor and defecated.

According to local newspaper Gefle Dagblad, the man has admitted to the offence, and will pay 975 kronor ($143.5) to the shop which will cover the cleaning bill and the cost of a pair of trousers on display in the shop, which were ruined when the man smeared his faeces over them.

However, the man was also convicted of theft as he had broken into a local establishment and pilfered four bottles of alcohol to a value of 800 kronor a few days after the poo incident, as well as damaging a window in a house owned by landlord Gävlegårdarna.

For these offences the man will pay 1,700 kronor for the theft and 2,571 for the damages to the window.

However, the district court also sentenced him to prison as he was already serving a suspended sentence for a drug related crime, and had a previous criminal record, according to the paper.
