Landlord bans couple for doing 'too much' laundry
A Swedish couple has been barred from using the laundry room in their apartment building after neighbours complained that they were using the communal facilities too often.
According to the landlord of the building, located in Karlstad in central Sweden, the couple were in the habit of reserving the building's communal laundry facilities up to eleven times per month, the Hem & Hyra newspaper reported.
The frequency of the couple's visits prompted neighbours to complain about the noise as well as the fact that it became difficult for others to reserve time to do their laundry.
The couple's use of the common laundry room took place despite the fact that the landlord had outfitted their flat with a laundry room of its own when the couple moved into the building.
But after neighbours' got their knickers in a bunch, the landlord reached an agreement with the couple allowing them to wash their bed clothes one time per month in the building's laundry room.
The rest of the couple's dirty laundry, however, would need to be washed in their apartment.
But the couple completely ignored the clean clothes covenant, according to Hem & Hyra, prompting the landlord to take additional measures to prevent the compulsive washers from abusing their laundering privileges.
At first the landlord demanded the couple return the key to the laundry room.
When they refused, however, he then decided to change the locks on the door.
The move prompted the couple to lodge a complaint with the Rent and Tenancy Tribunal (Hyresnämnden).
However, the panel sided with the landlord, finding that the couple had indeed overused the building's laundry room and ruling the landlord was justified in revoking their right to use the communal facilities.
