Missing Swede found barefoot and freezing
A 58-year-old man from southern Sweden who had been missing since Monday was found on Wednesday evening far from his home, claiming to have been abducted.
“He was confused and injured. We were soon able to identify him as the missing 58-year-old,“ said Robert Loeffel of the police to news agency TT.
Håkan Ingervald from Växjö in southern Sweden had disappeared under rather suspicious circumstances on Monday morning, leaving his breakfast on the table and coffee in the percolator.
The only sign of him was a bloodied newspaper on the drive and a pair of slippers he left behind.
Ingerwald's wife reported her husband missing after workmen who were doing some work on their house flagged his sudden and unexpected disappearance.
Ingerwald has no criminal record and is not previously known to police.
Police have been baffled by his disappearance after a forensic investigation uncovered little other than bloodstains on the stairs despite sniffer dogs patrolling the area.
But on Wednesday, an exhausted and barefoot Ingerwald, hands tied up with sliver duct tape, rang the doorbell of a house some 140 kilometres from his home, looking for help.
“He said he had been kidnapped and dumped in the woods. He said he had walked all day,” said Annelie Simonsson, whose house Ingerwald had approached, to daily Aftonbladet.
The family, who recognized Ingerwald as the missing person from the paper, immediately called the police and he was quickly taken to hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.
Police spokesperson Loeffel was unwilling to disclose he extent of Ingerwald’s injuries, but said they had been able to speak to him briefly on Wednesday night.
“We have received information form him stating that he was abducted,” Loeffel told TT.
A police press conference has been scheduled for Thursday.
