Pippa Middleton to ski in Sweden's Vasaloppet
Philippa "Pippa" Middleton, sister-in-law to Britain's Prince William, is set to compete in Sweden’s annual Vasaloppet cross-country ski race in a bid to raise money to fight children’s hunger.
Middleton and her brother James, siblings of Princess Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge, have signed their names to take part in the 90 km race on Sunday, March 4th, together with 15,800 other registered participants.
“It is now confirmed. We have been contacted by a person close to them who has asked us if we could arrange this," said Per Strid, Vasaloppet spokesperson said in a statement.
"It’s really fantastic that such well known people will take part; it shows that our arrangements attract not only the most renowned skiers in the world but also some of the most famous personalities in the world as well! Everyone does it because it’s a challenge and achievement to ski Vasaloppet."
As a result of the royal participants, event organizers are anticipating increased media attention from Britain, and are taking measures to ensure adequate information is provided to help foreign media find their way to the course from the airport.
The Middletons are following in the footsteps of their older sister, Kate, who has been a strong advocate of charity work in the past.
Pippa has confirmed that children’s hunger will be the target problem their charity work will address.
“My brother and I are raising money for Magic Breakfast, a small registered charity that fights child hunger through breakfast clubs and delivering free breakfasts (bagels, cereal, juice and porridge) to thousands of state primary school children in the UK particularly our inner cities,” Middleton wrote on her JustGiving.com donation website.
So far, the Middleton siblings have raised £4,657 ($7,379) including one donation of £1,000.
Inspired by a now-mythical journey by Sweden's future king Gustav Vasa, who was locked in fierce struggle against invading Danes in 1521, the Vasaloppet has grown into one of Sweden's most-watched sporting events.
Swedish royals are no strangers to the race, with King Carl XVI Gustaf braving the cold in 1977, Prince Carl Philip in 2004 and Princess Madeleine in 2008.
