"Jil Sander is coming back as creative director," a spokeswoman for Jil Sander AG told AFP. The move will take effect on February 27 when the label's current creative director, Belgian Raf Simons, is due to leave.

"I am very happy and excited to be back. It feels like coming home after a brief journey. The Jil Sander brand is ingrained in my very being," 68-year-old Sander was quoted as saying in the company's press release.

"Paradigms change and evolve from season to season, but the heart of a brand doesn't alter. It will be a great challenge and a greater joy to design Jil Sanders contemporary identity," said the German-born designer.

Head of the Jil Sander Group Alessandro Cremonesi also welcomed Sander's return to the fold. "It is a moving moment to welcome Jil Sander back, who created this unique fashion house, and then shaped its rise into a highly estimated global brand," he said.

"Jil Sanders human passion and visionary strength are a priceless force for the future of our company. Her entrepreneurial attitude will be highly beneficial to all aspects of the group. Its almost too good to be true."

Sander founded the fashion house in 1968. But Prada bought a 75-percent stake in 1999. She initially stayed on as creative director but resigned a little later owing to differences with Prada chief executive Patrizio Bertelli.

Sander made a surprise return to the label in 2003 but her stay again proved short and she quit after just two collections. In 2006, Prada sold Jil Sander AG to London-based British private equity firm, Change Capital Partners (CCP).
