When readers of the southern Sweden daily Sydsvenskan surfed onto the site on Monday, they were greeted not by the latest news from the region but images of a scantily clad Paris Hilton and other less-than-fully-dressed celebrities.

”Instead of a news site, readers have found themselves on a site of a totally different character. To say the least,” the paper explained after the incident.

According to the paper's project leader for digital journalism, Matthias Persson, the problem, which only affected readers using Internet Explorer, persisted for about an hour until technicians managed to solve it.

It is the first time since he started there four years ago that the paper has encountered this kind of problem, Persson told media and advertising trade paper Resumé.

”It is a complete disaster and terribly embarrassing. But we closed the gap as soon as we were able. However, it was a bit late by then,” said Persson to the paper.

Sydsvenskan urged readers with Internet Explorer to restart their machines, empty the cache memory and remove all the cookies. They also told readers to check their virus protection programmes were up to date, according to Resumé.

There were differing reactions to the incident according to Persson.

”Everything from being astounded to very upset. But some were helpful as well,” he told Resumé.

The paper hasn't reported the hacker attack to the police yet, but Persson said that not much time has passed since the incident occurred and that management would discuss on Tuesday how to make sure nothing similar can happen again.
