“With a lot of German beer and Jägermeister, I’ll be able to keep myself warm,” the former Calvin Klein cover model said in a statement prior to the event, held in the sleepy Lower Saxony town of Braunlage.
For the forth year in the row, the normally quaint mountain village found itself transformed into the global centre of naked luge at the weekend, as 25,000 spectators turned up to watch 17 men and 13 women tear off their clothes and hop aboard sledges before throwing themselves down the slopes as part of the 2012 Nude Luge World Championships.
Despite the name, racers were not totally nude – competitors in the annual competition have to wear a helmet, shoes and a pair of undies. But this is not due to the nippy weather conditions – safety always comes first, organizers said.
A warm-up “ladies-only” round kicked off the event, allowing onlookers to see 25-year-old porn star Mia Magma sliding down the 89 metre long run not once, but twice.
Schenkenberg, 43, was the main attraction for the men’s competition, however, with organizers taking great pains to publicize the fact that the former “sexiest man alive” title holder and his famous washboard abs would be on display at this year’s competition.
Drizzle and near freezing temperatures failed to dampen the enthusiasm of fans, however, who cheered the winner, a 37-year-old man from Hannover, who walked away with the €1,000 ($1,300) prize.
Schenkenberg, meanwhile, finished fifth.
Celebrations continued into the night, with live music and nudity-enthusiast Micaela Schäfer entertaining the crowd with her DJ skills.
The event, organised by radio station 89.0 RTL, has been gaining in popularity – two years ago just 14,000 people turned up to watch.
