More extreme weather heading toward Sweden
Swedish forecasters have issued warnings for the coming weekend, flagging for more snow over the whole region and a possibility of strong winds in the west.
In northern parts of Västernorrland, the snow is expected to fall between 10 to 20 centimetres deep over Saturday and Sunday afternoon and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a class 2 warning for the region.
Similar conditions apply for the Västerbotten coastline, where SMHI has issued a class 1 warning.
Although lowest of three possible warning levels, experts at SMHI are warning that the damage may be extensive.
“Strong winds are expected over Götaland, which may be severe in places, mainly on the West Coast,” said Emil Björck, forecaster at SMHI.
There is also a high risk of ice coatings on the roads, according to the forecasters.
Meanwhile, high avalanche risks have been reported for ski-slopes across the country. In Åre and Idre, popular ski resorts in northern Sweden, the risks have been raised from a level three to a level four on a five-grade scale.
Experts have reported that the off-piste skiers are at highest risk, and that there will be no danger on prepared slopes.
“The most important thing right now for those who are here to ski off-piste is to obtain information on where it is dangerous and how dangerous it is. If you’re just here to go for runs on marked trails, then you don’t need to worry about anything,” said Mårten Johansson, instructor at the Åre Avalanche Centre.
