Pupils march for teacher accused of abuse

One hundred school pupils rose up on Monday in defence of their teacher, protesting his innocence in the freezing cold against allegations of abuse.

Last week, three students at the Centre des Deux-au Thielles Landeron school in Neuchâtel complained that their teacher had physically abused them.

But fellow students insist such a thing cannot be true, asserting instead that the blame lies with the pupils rather than the teacher, online news site 20 Minutes reports.

“He is the best teacher I ever had,” one pupil told the website.

Another described how the teacher could sometimes be strict, but was always fair. “He could be cool and make us laugh,” he said.

The school administration had known for some time that there was a difficult relationship between the three students and the teacher. The teacher’s supporters, including students and parents, believe that the allegations are all lies.

“This teacher is the victim of an injustice and we must not let it go on,” said Shadya, a 15-year-old pupil and one of the protest’s organizers.

The protestors made their way to the Department of Education, Culture and Sport, where Deputy Secretary General Thierry Christ expressed his admiration for the action taken by so many young people.

The decision as to whether any charges are to be made is to be taken by the school’s principal. However the school’s directorate has so far remained silent as to its intended course of action.
