A call to emergency services about the shooting, which took place on Fosievägen, came in shortly before 7pm.

According to one witness, several shots were fired.

“I heard three bangs and now the place is crawling with police with automatic weapons. I saw them carry a person out to an ambulance and try to resuscitate him,” the witness told the local Sydsvenskan newspaper.

Skåne police spokesperson Calle Persson told the TT news agency that when police arrived on the scene they found a man who had been shot inside a car near Eriksfälts school.

“Sniffer dogs have been sent in and are examining the cordoned off area, but I haven't heard that they've found anything yet.” said Persson.

He added that police believe that the man was shot where he was found.

“That's probably where the crime scene is, or somewhere nearby, based on where witnesses heard the shots,” Persson told TT.

Police have begun a forensic investigation, are interviewing witnesses, and checking vehicles in the area.

According to the Aftonbladet newspaper, the victim was a 48-year-old father of four

Tuesday's shooting is the eighth deadly shooting in Malmö since May 2011.

Most recently, a 48-year-old man was shot dead in the city's Lindängen neighbourhood on Januaray 3rd.

Two days earlier, a 15-year-old boy was shot in Rosengård shortly after the start of the new year.

This past weekend, three people were injured in two separate shootings, with two of the victims requiring surgery.

A man armed with a pistol shot a 19-year-old and 21-year-old in central Malmö on Saturday morning. A 22-year-old was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

And on Sunday morning, a 38-year-old man was shot in Rosengård. No arrests have yet been made in the case.
