A brutally cold high pressure system from Siberia tightened its icy grip on Germany on Monday, as temperatures were poised to plunge below -20 degrees Celsius later in the week.

“The cold snap’s ‘highpoint’ is likely to be on Friday. The rest of the week will simply be frigid,” said DWD meteorologist Thomas Ruppert in a statement.

The eastern parts of the country early on Monday were already hit by the Russian deep freeze, with temperatures hovering below -10 degrees. The only part of the country likely to crack the freezing mark was along the Rhine River.

There was a trade off for the warmth, however, as western regions were expected to remain heavily cloudy on Monday compared to the crisp sunshine seen elsewhere.

But the DWD German Weather Service said the cold was set to become even more intense as the week continued. Lows overnight of -15 were to be followed by highs on Tuesday of -7 to just above freezing.

Widespread sunshine on Wednesday was unlikely to warm things much, as highs across the entire nation were expected to remain below freezing. Overnight Wednesday temperatures could plunge below -20 degrees in regions covered in snow.

The weather portal Wetter.net reported that in parts of eastern German brisk winds could make the temperature could feel like -35 Celsius.

The cold air coming in from Siberia has already caused several deaths across Eastern Europe.
