The incident took place around 8am on Sunday in the city's Guldheden district, the Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper reported.

According to police, the woman and three others were partying in a flat on the third floor when someone decided to throw the dog from the apartment's balcony.

The dog's owner reported the incident to police who subsequently apprehended a woman in her thirties on suspicion of animal cruelty.

“The dog survived without serious injury, but was clearly affected by the incident. It was frightened and shy and according to the owner, that's not the dog's normal behaviour,” a spokesperson with the Gothenburg city police told the newspaper.

Police estimate the dog's fall was between five and seven metres.

The woman suspected of throwing the dog from balcony was also under the influence of a controlled substance when she was arrested.

In addition to animal cruelty, the woman is also suspected of minor drugs offences for possessing narcotics meant for personal use.

A conviction for animal cruelty in Sweden can result in up to two years in prison, while minor drugs offences can be punished with fines or up to six months in prison.
