Berlin attack may be work of Kurdish terrorists
Police believe a Molotov cocktail attack on a Turkish cultural association Tuesday evening may have been the work of a terrorist group banned from the European Union.
Although seven people were in the headquarters of the “Turkish Idealists” organization when the attack happened, no-one was hurt when the five masked men burst into the building and began hurling firebombs, according to Berlin's BZ newspaper.
The members of the club, which supports Turkish nationalist causes, were able to douse the flames, but not before furniture and parts of the building had been severely damaged, the BZ reported.
Police said they suspected the attack was the work of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
The group, labelled a terrorist organization by Germany and the European Union, is fighting for the rights of Turkey’s Kurdish minority by launching attacks against Turkish interests.
Last fall, suspected PKK sympathizers stormed the studios of the RTL television network in Cologne before being forcibly evicted by police.
In 2010 the Turkish government said Germany wasn’t doing enough to combat PKK activities on its territories.
German police have said repeatedly that they're worried about the threat the PKK poses to the country's interests.
