While many Germans complain of immigrants arriving and drawing on the social security system, tens of thousands of Germans also emigrate every year looking for wealth, as new statistics show.

According to the latest emigration figures, recently published by the German statistics office, 141,000 Germans emigrated in 2010.

That's fewer than in previous years (155,000 in 2009 and 161,000 in 2008), while around 115,000 returned from foreign climes.

As in previous years, the top country of emigration was Switzerland, where 22,000 Germans moved last year. Another 13,000 pursued the American dream and moved to the US.

The statistics show that two-thirds of emigrants stayed in Europe, 16 percent moved to the US and 10 percent to Asia.

Further down the list, just over 9,000 moved to Poland, while just under 9,000 moved to the UK.
