Although 2011 may have ended on a sour note for Saab employees, as the year draws to a close, the cars themselves have suddenly become hot property again.

The news of the car maker's bankruptcy may have seemingly closed a chapter in Saab’s history, but buyers have been quick to snap up the cars at bargain prices or as mementos for the future, reports Swedish business newspaper Dagens Industri (DI).

The price of secondhand Saabs has plummeted dramatically recently, continuing a downward trend that has been noticeable over the past three years, according to company car consultancy Ynnor.

Cars formerly selling at 60,000 kronor ($8,700) have been sold for 20,000 less in recent times and business has been hectic. In fact, of the four best-selling used cars in Sweden, two are Saab models.

So far this year, Saab dealers have sold 20,000 pre-owned cars in Sweden, while the Volvo V70 has been the most popular, reaching 25,000 cars sold.

Beyond simple bargain hunters, another example of typical buyers is apparently families needing a bigger car.

"They get a good and safe car, for no money at all, relatively speaking”, said Ronny Svensson at Ynnor."Also, there are workshops everywhere that can repair a Saab," he added.

Meanwhile, while bargain hunting buyers have been the winners, there is less cause for celebration among dealerships and companies leasing out the cars who have both been hit by the winding up of the car maker.
