The Austrian resort of Grossarltal, near Salzburg, was the most successful year-round resort thanks to high numbers of overnight stays and excellent, well-used faciliites.

Austria clearly dominates the Alpine the 2010 TOPindex of competitiveness and performance of Alpine destinations compiled by the BAK Basel Economics organisation which compared 150 different locations.

The most successful Swiss destination is Lucerne, which is in fifth position. Its positive result is due to its “excellent” use of infrastructure and many sites of interest around the lake.

In the year-round rankings, Engelberg, in the centre of the country, rose from 20th to 9th place in just one year, whereas internationally renowned Zermatt fell from 6th to 10th.

When ranked by season, Lucerne was the best summer destination and Austrian Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis was the best winter Alpine resort reaching high capacity and offering superior accommodation, particularly for families.
