Agencies list Sweden's safest places

The safest municipality in Sweden is Habo, north of Jönköping in central Sweden, where the risk of having an accident or being subjected to a crime is the smallest in the country, according to a new report.

”In general it is safe to say that Sweden's municipalities have become slightly more safe over the last decade, just looking at crimes and accident figures,” said CEO for the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) Håkan Sörman in a statement on Tuesday.

The annual review of accident, fires, violent crime and theft per 1,000 inhabitants is carried out by SALAR and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (Myndigheten för samhällskydd och beredskap, MSB).

The twenty municipalities with the best overall results are listed in the study.

It is the fourth year running that the agencies' statisticians present the figures to show how safe it is to live in various parts of Sweden.

”We want to show the good examples,” said Marcus Cato, one of the SALAR investigators, to news agency TT.

The inhabitants of Habo can rest safely in their beds at night, knowing they live in the safest corner of Sweden.

Öckerö in western Sweden, Salem in Stockholm and Lomma in the south are also relatively safe places to live, according to the study.

Examples of municipalities that didn’t score so well in the study are Malung-Sälen, Sollefteå and Åsele in the north, Sala in central Sweden and Hultsfred in the south.

However, the results for Malung-Sälen and Hultsfred are seen as slightly deceptive, as they are influenced by the influx of ski resorts tourists to the Sälen Mountains and music festivalgoers to Hultsfred in the summer, according to statisticians.
