Swedes pick country manor over exotic abode
A recent survey from Swedish real estate agency Fastighetsbyrån showed that when Swedes get to choose freely, a flat in New York or a castle in France holds no allure.
Instead most Swedes dream of a mansion in the Swedish countryside, with a sea view and a fully equipped kitchen.
Although 39 percent of Swedes are happy living where they are, the study showed that among those who would like an upgrade, most dream of more space, a house in the country or a detached house near the city.
“Many seem to want to escape the stress and the overcrowding and dream of a calmer existence in luxurious surroundings,” said Johan Vesterberg, head of information at real estate agents Fastighetsbyrån in a statement.
When asked about their dream house, Swedes stay close to home.
The greatest percentage of respondents, 16 percent, said they’d choose a mansion in the Swedish countryside if they could have whatever they wanted.
In second place, at 13 percent, came a bungalow somewhere in the Caribbean, and at 12 percent a vineyard in Tuscany.
And when asked to choose something to make their dream home special, a fully equipped and top of the range kitchen headed Sweden’s wish list, beating a sea view and a roof terrace, which came in at joint second.
The survey also showed that a higher number of women than men dreamed of a walk-in-closet - while a higher number of men than women would choose a home cinema.
The survey was carried out in October for Fastighetsbyrån by market research company Reagera.
1000 Swedes between the ages of 20 and 74 took part in the study by answering questions online.
