Bavarian ski slopes open
Several ski resorts in Bavaria are preparing to open for the season this weekend after waiting patiently for enough snow.
Operators on Tuesday said they expected five out of six lifts to be in operation on Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, which is now blanketed in 30 to 80 centimetres of the white stuff.
The opening of the slopes on the Zugspitze was originally planned for November 26, but ski fans had to wait due to the lack of snow.
Two ski areas in the Bavarian Forest, Reit im Winkl and Großer Arber, are also preparing to ring in the season on Saturday, with both reporting around 30 centimetres of snow on the pistes.
However, the construction of a church out of snow has been delayed in the region because of warm temperatures. The village of Mitterfirmiansreut now hopes to open the frosty house of worship with space for 200 people on December 28.
