Bed-ridden man killed after Facebook post

A 55-year-old Swede was found murdered in his home in the country's far north on Saturday, days after having posted on Facebook that he was ill and had lost mobility in his legs.

“When I saw his post I thought that it was a very bad idea. He shouldn't have done it. If there are any malicious people out there he has no way of defending himself,” a friend of the murdered man said to local paper Norrländska Socialdemokraten (NSD).

Police were called to the 55-year-old's home early Saturday morning to find him badly beaten and having sustained knife wounds. The injuries were so serious that it was not possible to save the man's life.

At the scene of the crime, police also apprehended two men, aged 24 and 44, who were significantly inebriated. Both are now under arrest on suspicion of murder with an alternative charge of manslaughter.

Due to their enhanced level of intoxication it proved difficult to question the men over the course of Saturday.

“There was some drink involved and they also wanted legal counsel for their second interrogation. It takes some time to get the lawyers up to Kalix where they are being held,” said prosecutor Sebastian Flodström to the paper.

However, the two men have since been questioned by police but deny the allegations made against them.

Locals are flabbergasted at what has happened in their midst. Many villagers were sad and called what had happened a “tragedy”.

Police have conducted a forensic investigation of the site at the weekend.

“There have been some findings,” Flodström told the paper.
