A panicked home-owner in Thuringia found a truck smashed into his house with the engine still running. The police discovered the driver had gone to the pub.

The 46-year-old trucker had lost control of his vehicle in the town of Suhl and run off the road, smashing through a fence, careering through the garden before coming to a halt when it hit the house wall.

Yet rather than call the police – or apologise to the people in the house – the driver had wandered off to find the nearest bar and started drinking after the accident on Monday evening.

By the time the police found him, the driver was seriously drunk, with an alcohol test showing he was more than twice the legal limit at 0.22 percent blood alcohol content.

Now further tests are being conducted to see how drunk the driver was when he had the accident. “There is no way he could have got himself so drunk during the short time between the accident and the arrival of the police,” a police spokesman said.

No-one was injured in the crash, but it is thought to have caused damage worth at least €10,000.
