”He is previously known to the police,” said Cindy Schönström-Larsson, press officer for the Skåne County police, to news agency TT.

According to the local Sydsvenskan newspaper, the victim was the head of the Bröderskapet ('The Brotherhood') criminal gang.

However police refused to comment on the report, instead saying that they plan to hold a press conference about the incident on Friday morning.

The area has been cordoned off and is being searched by K9 patrols. At this point the police can't say exactly where the shooting occurred, if it took place indoors or on the street.

”We don't know yet if the man was shot where he was found or somewhere else,” said another police press officer, Calle Persson.

But according Sydsvenskan, the shooting most likely occurred indoors, in an office belonging to a taxi company.

”A large area has been cordoned off. The county police has arrived and they are searching the perimeter with dogs, and armed police are everywhere. The forensics team has just arrived,” Sydsvenskan journalist Joakim Palmkvist reported at lunchtime.

According to Persson, police are currently interviewing several witnesses.

”But whether anyone has seen the whole incident, or parts of it, I don't actually know,” he said.

Police are yet unclear on whether one shot, or several, were fired.

”The person who called in said there had been a shooting but didn't specify if more than one shot was fired,” Persson said.

The call came in to the station just before 11am, according to TT.

According to Sydsvenskan, the 31-year-old was seriously injured by the time emergency crews arrived and died on the way to hospital.

The Brödraskapet gang was founded on May 1995 by inmates at the maximum security prison in Kumla in central Sweden and is considered to be one of Sweden's most feared organized criminal gangs.
