"He allegedly heard something about 'damn screw'," referring to the British English colloquialism for prison guard, according to Marie Lundberg at the Norrtälje police.

"But he can't say for sure, I guess he was so terrified," she added.

The 30-year-old guard had gone out for a walk during the evening when a man leaped out from behind a tree and pressed something into his chest.

"He instinctively fenced off the man's hand. Then he heard a bang. When he's lying down he was then beaten and kicked," Lundberg said.

The guard was hit in the shoulder but was able to call for help and was then taken to the hospital with injuries which were assessed to be relatively mild.

The 30-year-old has been allowed to leave the hospital, but has not been able to recognize or identify his assailant, who remains on the run.

Norrtälje police confirmed that there are currently no witnesses to the attack.

The bullet remained in the guard's shoulder when he arrived at the hospital and police technicians will later be able to examine the type of gun used.

The assault is being investigated as attempted murder.
