Clinton cancels Malmö visit after family death

Former US president Bill Clinton has been forced to cancel a visit to Malmö at the last minute following a death in the family.

Clinton had been due in the Swedish city to hold a lecture for local business organization Malmö Börssällskap but has cancelled due to the death of Dorothy Howell Rodham, his mother-in-law.

"Due to family reasons President Clinton has been unable to attend the evening's event. We know that many were looking forward to the evening and hope to be able to return with a new date for a visit by President Clinton," the association said in a statement.

Dorothy Howell Rodham, who is thus the mother of US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, died aged 92-years-old on Tuesday after having fallen ill.

The family bereavement also scuppered plans for Hilary Clinton's visit to Europe and Turkey in order to attend to her mother.

Bill Clinton, who served as US president 1993-2001, had planned to visit Malmö on Tuesday evening and then move on to Copenhagen on Wednesday. He is expected to be back in the southern Swedish town in the spring 2012.

According to Malmö Börssällskap, Clinton was due to talk about global charity, among other things, during his stay in Malmö.

Clinton works full time with his philanthropic foundation the William J Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative, which works to enable people to meet the challenges of globalization.
