Stieg Larsson books to become comics

Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millennium thrillers are to be turned into graphic novels, US comic-book powerhouse DC Entertainment said Tuesday after announcing that it had secured "worldwide rights" to adapt the trilogy.

In a statement ahead of the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany, the publisher behind Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman said its Vertigo imprint would work with Larsson's estate and Hedlund Literary Agency to adapt the books.

"Each book by Larsson will be presented in two graphic novel volumes that will be available in both print and digital formats," it said, starting with "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" in 2012.

DC Entertainment co-publisher Dan DiDio said "the intricate characters and stories Larsson created in the Millennium Trilogy are a perfect match for the graphic novel format."

Crusading journalist Larsson was 50 when he died in November 2004, shortly before Millennium became the biggest global publishing phenomenon of the 21st century, selling tens of millions of copies in more than 40 countries.

A Hollywood adaptation of "Dragon Tattoo," directed by David Fincher ("The Social Network") and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, is due to be released at the end of this year.

The Swedish version of the films has helped to launch actress Noomi Rapace to a global audience and she is due to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in a new Sherlock Holmes movie.
