"After further investigation, the responsible prosecutor has decided to close the case, as there is no reason to believe that an offence subject to public prosecution has been committed," Malmö police said in a statement.

According to a report in the local Kvällsposten daily, the 12-year-old girl was on her way home on October 2nd from a friend's home in the Lindängen area of Malmö at the time of the alleged attack.

After becoming aware that a man was following her, she began to run but was eventually caught.

The newspaper reported how the man is thought to have held a can with a strong smelling liquid, believed by the police to be chloroform or ether, under her nose so that she became dazed and eventually passed out.

The girl reported that she awoke a few hours later and made her way home, telling her parents what had happened.

After an interview with the girl and her family the prosecutor took the decision to close the case.

Early in the investigation police released information that they had taken samples from the girl's clothing thought to be sperm.

But after further investigation it was confirmed that the substance was not sperm.
