Stockholm hosts rally against Syrian regime

Some 200 people held a rally against the Syrian regime near Sweden's parliament Sunday, calling on Stockholm and the European Union "to support the revolution in Syria".

Some demonstrators brought posters of Meshaal Tamo, a Syrian Kurdish opposition figure killed Friday as the Damascus regime continued its relentless crackdown on pro-democracy activists.

A Swedish police officer, questioned by AFP, said roughly 200 people attended the rally.

"We are here to support the opposition to the Syrian regime," said Lalesh Hajo, a Syrian Kurd who has lived in Sweden for 15 years and who brought his baby to the demonstration in a stroller.

"We are battling against a dictator ... our struggle is just," another activist said.

The United Nations estimates that more than 2,900 people have died protesting against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since March 15th.

Police in several European cities detained protestors over the weekend after they stormed Syrian diplomatic missions, including the country's embassies in Berlin and Vienna as well as its UN mission compound in Geneva.

Those protests, which largely involved Syrian Kurds, were also believed to be linked to Tamo's death.
