Norwegian students are among the oldest in Europe and are on average 28 years old, although the age of students everywhere is rising, a study has learned.

Just 35 percent of Norwegian students enrolled in programmes akin to bachelor degrees are below 22 years, compared to 85 percent in France. The study by The Nordic Institute for Studies, Research, Innovation and Education, or NIFU, suggest Norwegian students take good habits from stints in the workforce into student lives that have been put off for periods of one to four years.

Easy loans are said to be key to relaxed study plans.

“You can look at this in connection with the system of financing here in Norway,” said Jannecke Wiers Jensen of NIFU.

“In Norway there are opportunities one does not find in other countries,” Wiers said, adding that money for studies, living and travel is available and 30-something students can also partake. In North America, much of the burden of finance is “one-time only” and can only be shouldered with the help of parents.

Delaying one’s ride through academia affects the career choices one makes, and many feel choices made later are closer to one’s true interests.
