Christmas stockings at the ready for new Abba video game
The enduring popularity of Abba shows little sign of abating in the 21st century, with news that a new dance based video game is set for release as software giants around the world limber up for the lucrative Christmas rush.
Ubisoft has announced it will release "ABBA You Can Dance" on November 15. The game will be available only on the Nintendo's Wii console with motion-sensing controls and will feature 26 ABBA songs, including "Dancing Queen" and "Take a Chance on Me.”
It is not the first time that the legendary Swedish band have had a computer game based on their career. Abba Singstar was released by Sony for its Playstation consoles in 2008 and proved to be a big seller.
In that game, players can mime along to their heroes, while the soon to be released Nintendo game takes the experience one step further, giving players the opportunity to recreate Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida's unforgettable dance routines.
"In the video game market, Ubisoft is the dancing king," Ubisoft US senior
vice president of sales and marketing said in a statement in keeping with the nature of much of the group’s output.
Not to be deterred, he continued, "With ABBA You Can Dance, players can dance, they can jive, and they can have the time of their lives."
Even though the foursome split up in 1982, they remain nearly as popular today as at any other part of their career. To date they have sold more than 378 million records, the Mamma Mia movie and stage show has been a worldwide success, and rumours of a lucrative reunion have become a tabloid staple for decades.
