Långholmen FC prepare for Stockholm Cup final

The Local's partner club Långholmen FC are getting ready for the biggest night in the young club's nine year history on Wednesday when they take on Sollentuna United in the final of the prestigious Stockholm Cup.

"This match is about getting the whole club together. Not only for the members but the wider community - supporters, wives, ex-players and everyone else with an interest in the club," first team captain Andy O'Sullivan told The Local.

After a league season that has fallen short of the club's high standards, O'Sullivan argued that the Stockholm Cup final appearance is a big boost for all involved.

"This season has not been as successful as we had hoped. But this gives us a competitive match at the end of the season. This is a big event to get behind."

Off the field Långholmen Football Club has developed a reputation for its vocal and enthusiastic terrace culture and the club's loyal supporters club will be out in force again on Wednesday night at Grimsta IP in Bromma.

"It is not everyday you get to go to a cup final. We hope for a crowd of around 150-200 supporters. We are trying to sell it and promote it as much as we can," said Neil Banks of the LFC supporters club to The Local.

Andy O'Sullivan meanwhile chimed in with a few words on what the LFC support means to the players.

"Långholmen has always cherished the support. It gives an amazing lift as a player, to run the extra yard. Games like this are won by small margins and anyone who comes along can be sure that they will have a good time."

The club was started in 2002 by a bunch of expats looking for a bit of exercise on the gravel pitch of Långholmen, an island in the centre of Stockholm.

After progressing through the divisions, the club has grown to seven teams at various levels with a 150-strong membership spanning the generations and drawn from more than 20 countries.

The opposition on Wednesday night is Sollentuna United, a club with 1,200 members, 200 staff and a long, illustrious history. Their assistant coach is none other than former Arsenal winger Anders Limpar.

But despite the fact that Sollentuna play in division two, a couple of tiers above Långholmen, O'Sullivan argued that while there is respect, there is no fear in the Långholmen camp.

"In a one off football match you always have a chance. We are a good division four side. We may not have the strength in depth of some of the other clubs, but in a one off game..."

"One thing is for sure. We will give it our best, in classic British/Irish backs-to-the-wall fighting spirit," he promised.

Both Andy O'Sullivan and Neil Banks underlined that all are welcome to join in the fun. All those wearing the club colours of black and white will furthermore benefit from a discounted pre-match drink at the fan club's favourite watering hole - The Southside on Hornsgatan.

The match itself is being played at Grimsta IP in Bromma with a kick off time of 8pm.
