Swedish family reports agent after 'dream' Egypt holiday turns sour

Dead rats in the restaurant, frogs in the pool, cockroaches in the buffet – a Swedish family has reported their travel agent for false marketing after a dream holiday to post-revolution Egypt turned into a nightmare.

Despite costing the family over 30,000 kronor ($4,380) the holiday with they had booked to Egypt was nothing like the glossy brochure from holiday firm Ving had described.

According to daily Hallandsposten (HP), the family from Halmstad, in the south of Sweden, decided to report Ving after having a nightmare experience when they expected their dream holiday.

The family had booked a room at a newly built hotel with pool and all-inclusive meals.

A few days before they were to travel, the travel company got in touch with the family and said they wouldn't be able to stay at the hotel, since it hadn't been finished.

However, the family were promised accommodation at a hotel of the same standard.

When departure was imminent, the company got in touch again and said that the pools at the hotel would not be usable due to a faulty pump but that transport would be provided to a nearby facility.

By then it was also too late to cancel the trip with a refund, which had been an option before.

When the family arrived at the new hotel they were presented with a room that smelled of mould and had a view facing a brick wall. According to HP, they also found vermin in various places in the facilities.

The travel company has expressed regret at what has happened saying that the reason for the family's nightmare experience was the revolution in the country.

The family has since been compensated with 30 percent of what they paid for the trip, but the company is unwilling to pay out more.

The family has reported the matter to the The National Board for Consumer Disputes (Allmänna reklamationsnämnden - ARN).
